Icelandic Horse
Breeding Farm

We are a family-operated Icelandic horse
breeding farm in South Iceland

Vorsabær II is a family-operated Icelandic horse breeding farm in South Iceland. With over 100 horses on the farm and around 15 foals born each summer, our breeding program is built on carefully selected bloodlines, performance quality, and long-term breeding vision.

Alongside our breeding program, we also offer carefully guided horseback riding in South Iceland for guests who would like to experience our horses firsthand.

Our horses are bred, raised, and trained here at Vorsabær II, with daily care forming the foundation of our breeding program.

Guests who wish to experience the farm environment firsthand are welcome to join a guided farm visit at Vorsabær II, where daily life in the stable and breeding program is explained in more detail.

A Long-Term Breeding Vision

Our breeding program is built on decades of careful selection. Every pairing is planned with long-term genetic goals in mind - focusing on rideability, temperament, conformation, and expressive tölt. We prioritize quality, sound structure, and sustainable development of the Icelandic horse.

THE FOUNDATION

The Legacy of Litla-Jörp 1

Around 90% of all our horses at Vorsabæ 2 trace their pedigree back to the remarkable mare Litla‑Jörp 1 frá Vorsabæ 1. Björn purchased her in 1978, when she was already 15 years old, fully trained, and serving as a reliable riding horse for her previous owner. Þorkell Bjarnason, who was the Horse Breeding judge in Iceland at that time, judged the mare, receiving 8.0 for conformation, 7.78 for riding abilities, and an overall score of 7.89 — an impressive result for a mare with relatively limited training for a breeding judgement.

That same summer, Björn competed with her in a local riding club event, placing 3rd in B‑Flokkur (four‑gait) and 4th in Tölt T1.

Today, her bloodlines continue to influence the direction of Vorsabær II.

The Farm & Herd

  • Over 100 Icelandic horses

  • Approximately 15 foals annually

  • Carefully selected breeding mares

  • Performance-tested stallions

  • Raised and trained in the open South Iceland landscape

International Partnerships & Exports

Horses from Vorsabær II have been exported internationally to buyers in Germany, the United States, Denmark, France, and other European markets.

The best known offspring of Litla‑Jörp 1 is the stallion Gassi frá Vorsabæ 2, admired for his elegance and outstanding Tölt (received 9,5 for Tölt). Other daughters of Litla‑Jörp 1 include Litla‑Jörp 2 (sired by Þröstur frá Teigi), Kolfreyja (sired by Kolgrímur frá Kjarnholtum), and Tign frá Vorsabæ 2, a daughter of Hrafn frá Holtsmúla and full sister to Gassi. These mares have all numerous first‑prize offsprings and continue to shape the breeding at Vorsabæ 2 through their descendants.

Mares from Neistastaðir

Stefanía is born and raised at the farm Neistastaðir and she brought several breeding mares with her to Vorsabær 2 when Björn and Stefanía started their breeding together. They have contributed greatly to the quality of our herd. Among their notable offspring are:

  • Hagur frá Vorsabæ 2 – Nordic Champion in 4-gait the year 2024

  • Ássa frá Neistastöðum – the highest‑judged mare in Denmark the year 2000

  • Galsi frá Neistastöðum – winner of A‑Flokkur (five‑gait) at the Fákur riding club the year 2001
